DISEASES

There are over 60 different kinds of mammals in the State of
Illinois. All wildlife is capable of
spreading diseases or parasites to pets or humans. Because of the reduction of natural
predators many animal populations continue to grow. Due to many animal populations growing, interaction becomes more
frequent and the spread of disease between these animals becomes easier. Because of the growth of suburbs into their
natural habitat wildlife is forced to co-exist with humans. Unfortunately many animals decide to make
peoples’ homes or property into their dens increasing the chances of spreading
diseases to humans.
All urban wildlife can be dangerous to humans no matter how
cute they look or how much we would wish to have them in our backyards. Wildlife carries a large number of diseases
and parasites that can be spread to pets or humans and even their droppings can
be dangerous.
Contact with wild animals between humans and pets should be
avoided whenever possible. We are not
advocating not going to the zoo or taking a walk through a forest
preserve. Simply use common sense when
dealing with wildlife. Wash your hands,
keep small children away from possibly infected areas, and hire a professional
when needed.
