DISTEMPER
IDENTIFICATION: Distemper is a
highly contagious viral disease that infects animals such as raccoons, skunks,
coyotes, and unvaccinated dogs. It is
the 2nd leading cause of death for raccoons. This disease does not
affect humans but can be easily passed on to dogs or cats.
INFECTION: Animals become infected through
direct contact with bodily fluids or droppings from a contagious animal. This may also include airborne exposure to
the virus contained in the respiratory secretions of another animal. Pets should be vaccinated and contact with
wildlife should be avoided.
SYMPTOMS: The first sign of symptoms is eye or
nose discharge. Next will be coughing,
fever, unusual behavior, reduced appetite, disorientation, or vomiting. In the later stages seizures or paralysis
will occur. Eventually the disease
causes death. Many of the symptoms are
similar to and therefore often mistaken for rabies.
TREATMENT: The most effective means of
protection against distemper is to have your pets vaccinated. Puppies are especially susceptible to
infection and should be kept away from direct contact from wildlife or from
areas where wildlife could be present.
See your veterinarian about starting a vaccination program for your pet.
